The 10 Dignity Do’s and how you can become a Dignity Champion too

The 10 Dignity Dos

The Dignity in Care campaign has launched for its 14th year to promote access to dignified care. Each year, many people in different walks of life, such as carers, doctors, MPs and members of local action groups, sign up as Dignity Champions and challenge how care is provided.

Each Dignity Champion agrees to promote the following 10 Dignity Do’s and to encourage their colleagues and peers to do the same:

  1. Have a zero-tolerance of all forms of abuse
  2. Support people with the same respect you would want for yourself or a member of your family
  3. Treat each person as an individual by offering a personalised service
  4. Enable people to maintain the maximum possible level of independence, choice and control
  5. Listen and support people to express their needs and wants
  6. Respect people’s rights to privacy
  7. Ensure people feel able to complain without fear of retribution
  8. Engage with family members and carer as care partners
  9. Assist people to maintain confidence and positive self-esteem
  10. Act to alleviate people’s loneliness and isolation

This list describes the values and actions that someone who provides care should attain and promote to deliver a dignified service.

Anyone can become a Dignity Champion – all you need to do is register yourself through the Dignity in Care website and follow the simple instructions:

The website also provides handy resources to help promote dignity, including Action Packs for Dignity Champions discussing human rights, nutrition and public champions to demonstrate how we can take personal responsibility in making a difference. Dignity Champions can also print off a certificate to showcase their registration as well as downloading posters and cards of the 10 Dignity Do’s to be a reminder of the pledge.
