As we make our way through the summer holidays and enjoy our time in the sun with friends and family, it’s important to keep summer safety in mind.
Why Summer Safety?
Over the past month, the temperatures across the UK have hit over 35C. When the sun makes an appearance, it’s nice to go out and enjoy it. However, as we go out, enjoy the sun and spend quality time with our friends and family, it’s important to keep ourselves safe.
So, we have put together a handy guide on Staying Safe in the Summer to help you and your loved ones get the most out of the summer season!
Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Hot temperatures can lead to dehydration, so it’s important to keep an eye on your water intake. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle with you when going out and about. Keep a jug of cold water near you and refill it when it runs low if you’re staying at home. Remember that children and the elderly are at a higher risk of dehydration so keep an eye out for any symptoms, you can check out the NHS advice on dehydration here.
Protect your skin
Many of us like to soak up the sun and show off a glowing tan in the summer. It’s important to remember that the UV rays from the sun are harmful to our skin. So, make sure to stock up on sunscreen and use a generous amount on any exposed skin before going outside. Look for sun protection that is at least SPF 30 to stop your skin from burning and make sure to reapply throughout the day.
Check your medication
Some medications can increase your sensitivity to the sun and put you at risk of dehydration. Check with your GP or pharmacist if you have any concerns about the medications you take and how they might get affected by the hot weather.
The clothing you choose for the day can be a key part of summer safety. When the weather is hot, opt for light cotton or linen clothing to keep you cool. Choosing light colours can help stop you from feeling overheated, whilst ensuring your arms and legs are covered can prevent sunburn and sun-rashes. You can accessorise with a wide brim hat and sunglasses for a stylish look and extra protection!
Stay in the shade
The sun is at its strongest between 11 am and 3 pm. This is the best time to stay in the shade and be indoors. If you go out, find a shaded area to relax. An umbrella can be a good source of shade when out and about. You can also look for air-conditioned buildings such as cafes and restaurants to take a break from the sun.
Keep your pets safe
Summer safety is not just for humans, pets are at high risk of overheating during the summer. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water at all times and keep them inside within the shade to stop overheating. Check out your local pet store for cooling toys and accessories to keep your furry friend safe and comfortable. Make sure to walk dogs in the evening when it’s cooler and check the pavement before leaving the house. Remember if it’s too hot for bare feet, it’s too hot for bare paws!
Remember, COVID-19 is still a risk
Summer safety is not the only thing to keep in mind this season. Although the restrictions have been lifted, COVID-19 is a concern. Remember to wash your hands regularly and avoid crowded areas. If you develop any symptoms make sure to take a test as soon as possible and stay away from others until you receive your results.
