Heritage Healthcare North East Provide Support at Family Wedding

Proving Support at a Wedding

In the run-up to their daughter’s wedding, Mr and Mrs Hill were worried about who would look after Mr Hill’s father. Ted has dementia and is usually cared for by family members. As the family would be together to celebrate the wedding, the couple wanted Ted to have someone there for him to be part of the weekend, as well as give the family time to relax and enjoy the celebrations themselves.

The family turned to Heritage Healthcare North East for short-term support over the weekend. They wanted someone who Ted would get along with and who was trained in supporting clients with dementia. Our carer David was nominated by Registered Care Manager, Lisa Glass, due to his wealth of experience within the care industry.

David supported Ted during the evening reception, which was held on the Saturday, keeping him company as they enjoyed watching the family and friends dance at the disco.

The following day, the wedding guests took part in a range of activities on the grounds and surrounding areas of the wedding venue. As there was a chill in the air, Ted and David stayed inside where they got to know each other, talking about cooking and chatting with the guests between their activities.

“The family were very supportive and created a pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere,” said David. “When you feel relaxed and comfortable, the client feels relaxed in your company.”

At Heritage Healthcare, we pride ourselves on helping more people feel comfortable and independent, supporting clients with unique care packages tailored around their needs and wishes. We can support families with both long-term and short-term care, much like how David supported Ted.

Our services range from personal care and household help through to palliative and end-of-life, as well as respite care. We work with primary carers to create a care plan based on the current routine, getting to know a client’s likes and dislikes and what they want to do. Primary carers are rest-assured their loved ones are safe and comfortable whilst they take care of themselves.

David was able to provide this support to Ted’s family, allowing everyone to enjoy the wedding celebrations together and having peace-of-mind that Ted could enjoy the weekend too.

“I wanted to thank you for organising David to help and care for my father on Saturday evening and Sunday,” said Mr Hill in an email to Lisa Glass at Heritage Healthcare North East. “My father wasn’t easy especially on Saturday evening, but David responded superbly and was very professional and unflappable. By Sunday morning I think David and my father were pretty much friends. My family really valued David being there, from our point of view it was the correct thing to have his help. Please thank him big time on our behalf.”
