POSTED: 01/07/2024
By following these simple yet effective tips, you can ensure a safer and healthier summer. Stay hydrated, protect your skin, and choose the right times for physical activity to make the most of the sunny season.
As the temperatures rise, it’s crucial to take proactive steps to ensure the well-being of those in our care. Here are some practical tips to help you stay safe and comfortable during the summer months
Heat Safety
Our carers can assist in monitoring daily water intake to ensure adequate hydration, aiming for at least 2 litres per day. Proper hydration is essential to prevent dehydration, especially in hot weather. We also encourage reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption, as these can contribute to dehydration.
During peak heat hours (11 am to 3 pm), it’s beneficial to stay in cooler environments. Our carers can help by ensuring fans are used or assisting with cool clothing to help regulate body temperature.
Protecting skin from harmful UV rays is crucial. Our carers can assist in applying sunscreen with a high SPF and ensuring clients wear hats and lightweight, breathable clothing to prevent sunburn and heat-related illnesses.
Skin Care
The summer sun can dry out skin, leading to discomfort and potential health issues. Our carers can provide support with regular moisturising routines to maintain skin hydration and prevent dryness.
Summer brings insects that can cause discomfort. Our carers can help apply insect repellent when clients spend time outdoors, particularly during evenings, to prevent insect bites.
Physical Activity
To promote physical well-being without overheating, our carers can schedule exercise sessions during cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings.
Consider incorporating water activities like swimming or water aerobics into your exercise regimen. These low-impact activities not only provide a great workout but also help you cool off in the summer heat.
