Keeping Warm and Well During Winter

Winter is just around the corner, as the weather becomes a lot colder and the leaves are starting to fall from the trees.

Being prepared and staying well during winter is important, especially for those who are older or more vulnerable. Here are a few of our tips to help you stay warm and well during the winter months.

Wrap Up Warm

This is your sign that it is time to get your winter coat out of the cupboard! The temperature is dropping so we should all be wearing our ‘big coats’ on to keep up warm when outside. Don’t forget to accessories with a scarf, gloves and hat!

Keep Active

When it’s cold outside, it is very tempting to curl up on the sofa, but we still need to stay active. A little bit of activity can help the blood pump around the body and help build up your strength. Start with activities you are comfortable with, such as gentle stretches or walking between rooms. You can then progress onto more regular exercises such as swimming, walking or yoga. The Age UK website has provided a range of exercise plans to help you get started.

Healthy Eating

Eating regular healthy meals will always help to keep you well. In winter, make sure these meals are hearty and full of nutrients to fight against common colds and winter viruses. Make sure you are stocked up on canned and non-perishable food, and maybe batch cook a couple of meals ready for another day. The BBC Food website has a great selection of recipes to keep you warm in the winter months.

Keep your home warm

The recommended temperature for a warm home in winter is 18°C and living rooms increase slightly to 21°C. Ensure your heating system is in working order and there aren’t any drafts coming through the windows and doors. A nice pile of blankets to help you feel extra cosy during the winter evenings.

Get vaccinated

Not only should you receive the COVID-19 vaccination to prevent hospitalisation and serious illness from coronavirus, but you should also get the flu vaccination. The flu jab is free for people aged over 50, who live in a residential or long-term care facility, have certain health conditions, or provide care to an older or disabled person. You can book your flu vaccine with your doctors’ surgery or pharmacist.

Don’t Spread Germs

As well as the common winter illnesses, COVID-19 is still having an impact on our lives. Remember to continue to wash your hands regularly and wear a face covering when in busy spaces. Avoid physical contact with other people if you do feel unwell and make sure you speak with your doctor or a pharmacist about your symptoms and any recommended medications.

Keep Your Spirits Up

Winter can be a lonely time for many, especially those who live alone. Make plans with family and friends so you have something to look forward to. We need to remember to look after our mental health as well as physical health, so spending time with loved ones will always be good for the soul.
