During the summer, as the temperatures rise (and we become a bit sweaty) there is a higher risk of suffering from dehydration, especially those who are older or living with an illness.
Knowing the signs of dehydration is important; these include:
- Feeling thirsty or having a dry mouth
- Feeling lightheaded
- Dark and strong smelling urine
- Passing less urine than usual
These symptoms can be preventable so no one has to suffer.
Simply drinking more water is one way. For those who aren’t a fan of plain water, add a little squash or fruit juice to give it more flavour. Cups of tea and coffee aren’t going to be as effective as a glass of water. A handful of chilled bottles waiting in the fridge is perfect to grab when you’re heading out for the day. If you’re having a few friends or family member visiting, a large jug of refreshing water with a few slices of fruit will be hard to resist.
Large, excessive amounts of water at one time can cause more damage than good, especially for vulnerable people and children. If someone is suffering from an illness and is struggling to keep the water down, they should drink small but more frequent sips.
There is also foods which will contribute to keeping you hydrated; soup, jelly, ice cream and some fruits such as melons have high water content.
