World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, hosted on Saturday 12th October, is a day dedicated to celebrating and supporting hospice and palliative care around the world.

Set up by the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance, the day aims to draw awareness and understanding of the needs of people living with a life limiting illness, raise funds to support and develop hospice and palliative care around the world and share the vision to increase the availability of care. World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is celebrated on the second Saturday of October every year, with a selection of concerts, Voices for Hospices, taking place every two years.

This year’s theme is ‘My Care, My Right’ with an aim to encourage those impacted by a life-limiting illness to make their voice heard to policy makers to prioritize palliative care financing under Universal Healthcare. This year’s World Hospice and Palliative Care Day follows the UN High Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage, so is the perfect opportunity to vocalise the essential need of access to palliative care in all National Health Coverage.

What is palliative care?

Palliative care supports those who are living with an illness that can’t be cured and help them be as comfortable as possible. Carers, who could be a GP, family member or community nurse, create a care plan based on wishes and preferences, such as where to receive the care and where to be at the end. Palliative care is not just for end-or-life; it can be received earlier in the illness whilst receiving other therapies. This can be provided at home, hospital, community clinic or a hospice. For those deciding to stay at home, their GP would have overall responsibility.

As part of our home care service, the care team at Heritage Healthcare Epsom are trained to deliver palliative care in the comfort of a client’s home. Not only do we create bespoke care packages to suit the needs and requirements to each individual client, we support family members and loved ones and help with whatever is needed.
