September is Vascular Disease Awareness Month. This year we have talked about blood pressure and the ‘Know Your Numbers!’ campaign by Blood Pressure UK. High blood pressure is one of the factors that can put you at risk. The Circulation Foundation aims to raise awareness and understanding within our community.

What is vascular disease?

Vascular Disease is used to define diseases of the veins and arteries. These can affect the circulation of blood around your body and lead to disability and even death. Some of the most common vascular diseases are deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins, peripheral artery disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm and stroke.

Who is most at risk?

Everyone is at risk of vascular disease; however, some are more at risk than others due to health or lifestyle. Having diabetes will put you more at risk as high blood sugar levels can have an effect on your arterial walls, causing them to narrow. Being overweight or suffering from high blood pressure can also put you at higher risk. Lifestyle choices such as smoking, lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet will all increase your risk as well.

How do I prevent vascular disease?

Vascular disease is not fully understood, and you can not reverse it once it occurs. It can also be a hereditary condition, so speak to your GP if you have a family history of vascular disease.

An active, healthy lifestyle can help prevent you from developing many health issues. There is no guarantee that a healthy lifestyle will prevent health issues, but it does decrease your risk of developing them.

Making sure you exercise regularly and have a balanced diet will help you live a healthier lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy weight will help keep many risk factors under control. Stopping smoking can also benefit your health and decrease the risk of developing vascular disease.

Make sure you check your blood pressure regularly and keep an eye out for any changes to your health. Make sure to alert your GP if you have any concerns about your health as it’s always better to identify the problems early.
