Preparing Your Home For Winter

Preparing Your Home For Winter

As the temperature’s drop and the weather becomes chillier, we all want to feel warm and cosy within our own home.

This month, we have been helping everyone get prepared for winter, and have put together a handy checklist.

Making sure your home is winter-ready is important, so we have put together some useful tips:

  1. Keep your home at the correct temperature – as you prepare your home for winter, ensure your heating system is in full working order. The recommended temperature for the whole home, including bedrooms, is 18°C and living rooms increasing slightly to 21°C. Make sure windows and doors are shut in the evening to stop the warmth from escaping.
  1. Reseal window and doors – over time, the seals on windows wear away, causing draughts. Check the windows around the home for any worn away seals; if you find any gaps, you can purchase sealant from any hardware store, or use foam tape as a short-term solution.
  1. Use a draught excluder – not only can draught excluders prevent an outside chill from coming into your home, but it can also be a stylish addition to your living space. You can also make a draught excluder at home if you’re feeling crafty using fabric and stuffing – The National Trust have a great guide to creating your own
  1. Wrap up warm – make sure you have plenty of jumpers and socks to keep you warm during the winter months. Wear a thick, comfy coat when going out to protect you from rain, bitter wind and possibly snow. When indoors, blankets can help you feel cosy while you spend time inside with your household.
  1. Keep active and healthy – keeping yourself active by walking around the home helps to keep your blood pumping around the body. Regular exercise helps to lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, depression and dementia. Make sure you continue to eat healthy foods to give you a vitamin boost. Staying active and eating healthy helps you not feel cold when at home.
