Keeping Safe in the Cold Weather

After the heatwaves we have had throughout summer, the cold weather has come around very quickly! The nights are drawing in a lot sooner and there’s a bitter chill in the air.

The winter months not only bring festive cheer, but also winter illnesses and preventable accidents. Here are a few helpful tips to prepare for the next few months of cold weather:

  1. Stock up on cold and flu remedies – the change in weather has already brought the dreaded winter cold; be prepared by stocking up on medicines and remedies in case cold symptoms start. If you have a regular prescription, make sure it is ordered and collected in good time. Many doctors’ surgeries and pharmacies have shorter opening hours or are closed during the holiday season.
  2. Wrap up warm – it’s time to bring out your big, warm winter coat – and don’t forget your scarf, gloves and hat! Make sure you’re wrapped up warm before leaving the house, and as you have plenty of layers, you can remove the accessories and coat if you start to feel warm. While at home, wearing warm jumpers and having a pile of cosy blankets will keep you warm and keep heating bills low.
  3. Have the right temperature in the house – the right temperature for the living room is 21°C (70°F), bedrooms should be 18°C (65°F) and the rest the house should be 16°C (61°F). Make sure your heating systems are in good working order – no one wants to wake up to a cold house and no heating on a frosty morning. It’s also important to stop any drafts coming into the house. Check windows are doors are closed fully so heat doesn’t escape.
  4. Stay active with regular exercise – it’s very tempting to stay indoors and snuggle up on the couch, but we still need to keep our bodies active and blood pumping. If the weather is clear and the snow and ice is yet to hit, a walk to the local shops or around the neighbourhood will keep muscles moving. If the snow has started and weather is bad, walking around the house and up and down the stairs will also help.
  5. Book your free flu jab – If you are aged over 65 years, pregnant, have certain medical conditions, living in a long-stay residential home, or are receiving carer’s allowance, you are eligible to receive the flu vaccine. The vaccine will prevent flu symptoms and other potentially serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
