The Importance of Mindfulness for Mental Well-being

Heritage Healthcare have dedicated the month to #MindfulnessInMarch and are encouraging more people to practise mindfulness to improve mental well-being.

But what is mental well-being and why is it so important?

Mental wellbeing is about feeling good about yourself and be able to function well individually or in a relationship. It doesn’t mean feeling happy all the time, but being able to cope with the challenges we face, making the most of opportunities and feeling a sense of purpose.

It is normal to feel stressed and negative, but usually these feelings are managed and pass. However, sometimes these negative feelings can develop into a serious mental health problem. Those who experience low mental wellbeing over a long period of time are more likely to develop mental health issues in the future.

Why people struggle with mental well-being comes in a range of reasons, including bereavement, loneliness, relationship problems, work or money issues. Early life events and traumas also have an effect on future mental health problems.

Studies have shown there are five steps to improve mental well-being; connecting with those around you, being active and physically healthy, learning new skills, giving to others, and being mindful, which Heritage Healthcare are promoting this month.

Research has shown that mindfulness can have a positive effect on several aspects of a person’s health, including the mind, brain, body, behaviour and relationships. It has also shown to help with conditions, not just stress, anxiety and depression, but with addictive behaviours, and physical problems such as hypertension, heart disease and chronic pain.

The University of Oxford have provided evidence on the effectiveness of a mindfulness course and how effective it was for 273 people. The study saw a 58% reduction in anxiety levels, 57% reduction in depression and 40% reduction in stress.

Heritage Healthcare will be sharing information and ideas on practising mindfulness throughout March. We especially want to encourage our care assistants and home care clients to add mindfulness into their daily life.
