It’s back! #BewareWhoYouScare 2019

It's Back - Beware Who You Scare 2019

Our annual Halloween campaign is back – #BewareWhoYouScare supports vulnerable people who may not want trick-or-treaters knocking on their door on Halloween night.

While youngsters are planning their scary costumes and what route they will take to visit the houses with the best sweets, Halloween can be a very scary and confusing time for those who are older or vulnerable. Not only are the night’s drawing in earlier so it’s become a lot darker outside, but strangers wearing masks are knocking on the door. There’s a lot of people walking past the house, laughing and screaming, as well as spooky decorations within the local community.

For someone living alone or living with dementia, Halloween becomes scary for the wrong reasons, filling them with stress and anxiety. With our #BewareWhoYouScare campaign, we want more people to think about the person behind the door when out trick-or-treating. We have created a special poster for anyone who does not want trick-or-treaters visiting them this year, which can be placed in the window or on the door.

If you know of a vulnerable relative or neighbour who may be affected this Halloween, it’s important to make sure they feel safe. Help them be prepared for the evening and know to expect knocks on the door from children. Remind them they are not obliged to answer the door if they don’t want to, but if they already have a guest planning on visiting them, to schedule a time to expect them. They may want to be part of Halloween and hand out sweets at their front door, so arrange a time for you and your family to visit. For someone who may feel anxious or frightened about Halloween, it may be best to have someone with them to keep them company. They could be a family member, friend or a Care Assistant. The companion can either support the loved one answer the door or be the perfect distraction to keep their mind off the spooky goings-on outside.

At Heritage Healthcare Epsom, our Care Assistants support our clients with bespoke care services, including companionship. They are there to be a friendly and a trusted face to help our clients to remain living at home for longer.
